Jurgen Klopp has amassed an array of high-calibre attacking talent at Liverpool but Ben Doak could represent the future at Anfield. Mohamed Salah has maintained his excellent goalscoring form with 12 goals in all competitions this season after an eye-watering move to Saudi Arabia failed to materialise, while Darwin Nunez’s attacking output has improved considerably.

This time last year records were broken. We saw Premier League spending in the January transfer window hit new heights, as clubs in the division forked out €842.5 million on new stars, with Chelsea alone contributing a whopping €329m of that total. The previous record for a winter window stood at €568.4m, set back in the 2017/18 season. The January window had become slightly synonymous with the phrase ‘panic buy’ with clubs often opting to get the bulk of their arrivals in across the summer window, in-between seasons. However, last year caution was thrown to the wind - clubs went crazy like never before, as they scrapped to get deals done in an attempt to preserve their ambitions for the second half of the campaign.

Liverpool fans’ worst fears were realised this week when star forward Mohamed Salah picked up an injury whilst on international duty with Egypt. When asked about the extent of the injury at a press conference on Friday, Jürgen Klopp admitted that while they would need to wait for the result of the player’s scans before knowing anymore, things didn’t look good. “He felt it and we know how rarely Mo goes off so it is definitely something, but I don't have any more,” revealed the Anfield boss.

Jürgen Klopp shook the world of football, and sent earthquakes through Merseyside, when he announced that he would be stepping down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season. The German has been in charge since 2015, and has won every trophy possible during his nine years with the Reds. In an official statement, Klopp said: “It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.” And when you analyse how Klopp has had Liverpool competing right at the top of the game for the past five or six years without anywhere near the net spend of the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, or Chelsea, it’s easy to understand the 56-year-old’s necessity to take a break. Liverpool host Chelsea this Wednesday, in their first Premier League game since the news emerged about Klopp departing.
