Roma sign Bryan Reynolds - Most expensive US player in MLS history

Roma have registered Bryan Reynolds with the league, seemingly ending a transfer saga that started all the way back in December. Linked to multiple clubs and subject to various speculations, the FC Dallas right-back is on the verge of a landmark deal that will see him head from Major League Soccer to Serie A.

Brenden Aaronson from Philadelphia Union to Red Bull Salzburg and Mark McKenzie from the Union to Genk both set new standards for US players leaving the league. The Aaronson deal, which was $6 million (€5.1m), was the most expensive for a US homegrown player developed by an MLS academy. Reynolds, who will initially be signed on loan, could eventually break that record. 

Update 4:20 pm GMT: Roma have published the exact financial figures. Reynolds will join the club on loan until the summer for €100,000. The Serie A club then has an option to make the deal permanent for €6.75 million. The transfer also includes a number of performance-related add-ons, which could be worth a total of €5.65 million. The overall package of the deal—if all add-ons are met—is, therefore, €12.5 million. 

A historic deal for Reynolds - Only Davies more expensive

The full package makes Reynolds the most expensive American MLS academy player to leave the league. Overall, the right-back ranks behind Alphonso Davies. The Canadian joined Bayern Munich from the Vancouver Whitecaps in January 2019 in a deal worth an initial €10 million, which can grow all the way to €16 million once all bonuses are met.
