Newcastle to sanction Callum Wilson transfer? Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea 'interested'

It’s been a quiet transfer window for English clubs but Callum Wilson has generated considerable column inches. Spending is down significantly from last January with Premier League clubs’ spending power severely limited by FFP regulations.

Big money arrivals seem unlikely this month but Wilson would represent a high-profile departure. It’s been reported by various reputable outlets that Newcastle United could be forced to sell some of their star players to abide by FFP regulations. Newcastle are one of the richest clubs in the world as they are owned by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, but they will be limited financially with their revenue outside the top 15 clubs in the world. Bruno Guimarães has been linked with moves to Real MadridPSG and Barcelona with Miguel Almirón linked to Saudi Arabia. Newcastle rejected offers from Bayern Munich for Kieran Trippier but Wilson could feasibly exit.

Could Callum Wilson leave Newcastle United?

Newcastle will reportedly entertain offers in excess of €20m to green light Wilson’s departure in January, according to the the Standard. The Magpies have spent €469m since the Saudi takeover ahead of the January window in 2022 and it’s understood they are conscious of abiding by the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules. Wilson has been a terrific signing since arriving from Bournemouth for €22.25m in 2020, scoring 46 goals in 102 games - Wilson has scored 86 goals across nine seasons in the Premier League.

Besides financial factors, there’s two main reasons why Wilson could leave in January - injury record and Alexander Isak. Firstly, Wilson has missed 14 games through injury this season and he’s slightly injury prone. The English striker has missed 71 games in three and a half seasons at Newcastle and he’ll also turn 32 next month. Secondly, Eddie Howe has rotated between Isak and Wilson but the Swedish striker is a phenomenal prospect and deserves to start regularly. Newcastle were completely knocked out of European competition by finishing bottom of their Champions League group, so there’s less opportunity to rotate and Wilson will want to play regularly to bolster his England chances ahead of Euro 2024. On Friday, Howe admitted that he wanted to keep Wilson but hinted it might not ultimately be his decision. Howe said: "He is 100 per cent committed to Newcastle. We want two fit strikers and want to keep him, but obviously, some things are out of my control."

What clubs are interested in signing player Callum Wilson?

Atlético Madrid reportedly had a loan offer for Wilson rejected, while AC Milan were also accredited as holding an interest. Newcastle, however, are uninterested in sanctioning a loan deal with a permanent deal more appealing. The Standard have claimed that Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United are monitoring Wilson’s situation. All three clubs have been strongly linked with adding a new striker this month with United’s need for competition for Rasmus Højlund increasing with Anthony Martial ruled out for 10 weeks.

How much is Callum Wilson worth?

Wilson’s current market value stands at €13m but Newcastle reportedly want closer to €20m to sell him this month. The England international’s valuation has dropped steadily since March 2021 due to his age and injury record despite his good goal scoring record. Wilson’s record market valuation was €30 during the first half of the 2019/20 season, while at Bournemouth.
