Market values Portugal: Weigl drops - Nuno Mendes & Núñez on the up
In the latest Liga NOS market value update, Transfermarkt.pt has re-evaluated 120 players. The focus was on players that have newly joined the league and players that have either left their mark on the league early or have dropped in status.
At Benfica new signings Éverton (-€3m to €25m) and Darwin Núñez (+€8m to €18m) saw their market value adjusted to reflect the transfer fee. The Uruguayan striker has mostly shown his potential as an assist provider in Liga NOS—Darwin did, however, score three goals in Benfica's Europa League game against Lech Posen. The significant fee paid for the forward is considered as an investment in the future and his market value is expected to grow further this season.
The experienced defenders Nicolás Otamendi (-€3.5m to €11m) and Jan Vertonghen (-€4.5m to €10m) saw their market value drop due to their advanced age but also because of the loss of status that comes with moving from England to Portugal. German national team striker Luca Waldschmidt, however, saw his market value unchanged. But after a strong start, it is expected that he will see his value grow in the future.
Waldschmidt's teammate Julian Weigl, in the meantime, saw his market value drop by €3 million and is now worth €17 million. "The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder is only a squad player under new head coach Jorge Jesus and has yet to start a game," Portugal Area Manager Marcel de Almeida said. "The situation is similar for center-back Ferro, he has managed just 16 minutes, even though he was a regular starter last season." The 23-year-old will see his market value drop from €11 million to €8 million.
While there have been just a few changes at Porto, other than new signings Zaidu Sanusi (+€1.5m to €4m) and Nanú (+€1.7m to €3m) there have been few adjustments. At Sporting, Nuno Mendes, who is one of the biggest talents in the country saw his market value grow significantly. Targeted by Arsenal, Liverpool, and Milan, the 18-year-old is now a regular starter.
"Nuno Mendes plays as an attacking-minded left-back in Sporting's 3-5-2 system," de Almeida said. "He plays with a lot of guts, which makes his style spectacular, and is already a member of the U21 national team. Because of his potential Sporting were adamant that any club wanting to sign him will have to trigger his €45 million exit-clause." His market value does not quite yet reflect his exit-clause but, nonetheless, has grown from €7 million to €12 million.
