Gio Reyna with first Bundesliga assist - Chris Richards makes Bayern debut
Borussia Dortmund have secured the second spot in the Bundesliga. On Saturday the Black and Yellows beat third-placed RB Leipzig thanks to two goals by Norwegian striker Erling Haaland.
RB Leipzig, in the meantime, have to wait until matchday 34 to get their final confirmation of a Champions League spot. But three points and a 17 goal advantage over fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen makes qualification pretty much a formality.
Nonetheless, it was a disappointing performance against a Dortmund side that was complacent at times after taking the lead in the 30th minute. Dortmund won the ball deep in their own half, Julian Brandt found Giovanni Reyna in the box, who in turn set up Haaland for his first game of the game. It was the first-ever Bundesliga assist for the 17-year-old American.
Another American came on at halftime. Tyler Adams was brought on for Lukas Klostermann as RB Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann attempted to reshuffle the deck.
Leipzig were the better side in the second half but could not find a way through in the second half. Instead, Dortmund scored with just moments seconds to go in the match. Brandt escaped the defense on a counter and played a hard pass into the box where Haaland beat out Amadou Haidara to tap the ball across the line.
Chris Richards celebrates Bundesliga debut
American Chris Richards has made his Bundesliga debut for Bayern Munich. The Rekordmeister beat SC Freiburg 3-1 thanks to a goal by Joshua Kimmich and two goals by Robert Lewandowski (24' and 37')—Lucas Höler scored for Freiburg (33'). Richards came on in the 84th minute for Javi Martínez. Meanwhile, Saarpreth Singh made Bundesliga history, the New Zealand international became the first player of Indian descent to start a game in the German top flight.
Celebrations in Munich. In Bremen, things look dire, however. US men's national team striker Josh Sargent started in Werder's 3-1 defeat to 1.FSV Mainz. Die Werderaner can finish no higher than 16th this season, which would mean a relegation playoff spot.
That 16th spot is currently occupied by Fortuna Düsseldorf, who drew Augsburg 1-1. Two points ahead of Werder and six points behind Mainz, Fortuna are now the likely side to face the third-placed Bundesliga 2 side in the relegation playoffs.
Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim have secured their spots in the Europa League. Wolfsburg beat Schalke 4-1 and Hoffenheim smashed Union Berlin 4-0. The only major question mark on matchday 34 will be the final Champions League spot, which is currently occupied by Borussia Mönchengladbach thanks to a 3-1 win over Paderborn. They are two points ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, die Werkself lost 2-0 against Hertha on Saturday.
