Expansion side Inter Miami sign head coach Diego Alonso - Will oversee ambitious project

David Beckham's ambitious soccer project Inter Miami announced their first-ever head coach on Dec. 30, hiring Diego Alonso. The Uruguayan won the Concacaf Champions League with Mexican sides Pachuca CF (2017) and Monterrey (2019).

Diego Alonso is the only head coach to win the Concacaf Champions League with two different clubs. The Uruguayan also won the Liga MX Clausura with Pachuca in 2016 and reached the final of the Copa MX in the 2017 Apertura.

“In Diego, we found a manager that fits our culture and has a strong desire to build a winning club for our fans," said Inter Miami CF sporting director Paul McDonough in a club statement. "He brings a lot of experience and championship-winning mentality as we begin our drive to be among the best clubs in the Americas."

“It’s an ambitious and a winning project,” Alonso told AP. “That’s what I’m all about.”

Ambitions underlined by the club's spending this winter. Inter Miami have already signed 20 players, spending $15.57 million.

In Matías Pellegrini, who was signed for $9.23 million from the Argentine side Estudiantes, Miami have paid the third-highest transfer fee for an individual player in the ongoing MLS winter transfer window.

The 19-year-old Pellegrini is considered a big talent in Argentina and underlines the club's ambitions in their first season. Pellegrini, however, is not the only Argentine talent to sign for Miami. The club also signed Julián Carranza for $6.16 million from CA Banfield

“The idea of winning right away is the thing that I liked the most, the thing that convinced me the most,” Alonso added in the article published by AP. “I don’t see it as a challenge. I see it as an opportunity.”

Inter Miami have certainly embarked on an ambitious project. The club is set to start its inaugural MLS season on March 1, when they travel to California where they will face LAFC in Los Angeles.
