Aston Villa complete signing of Middlesbrough forward Morgan Rogers - spending passes €110m

Aston Villa have completed their second major signing of the January window, following the announced transfer of Middlesbrough forward Morgan Rogers on Thursday morning. In a club statement, the Premier League side confirmed the arrival of the 21-year-old talent, with reports suggesting an initial fee of €9.4 million for Rogers, with a further €8.1m in potential add-ons in the future. Rogers' previous club, Manchester City, are reportedly due 25% of the fee.

Rogers is the club’s second signing of the window, following a €7.5m move for Kosta Nedeljkovic was confirmed earlier in the month. Now that Rogers has made the move to Villa Park this month for the proposed price, it takes Villa’s spending this season on new players to €110m. Which only goes to show how much faith the club are putting in Unai Emery and his in-form side. But who is this new forward and how will he fit into Villa’s team?

How good is Morgan Rogers?

Rogers began his career at West Brom, where he quickly made a name for himself in the club’s youth squads, bagging eight goals and four assists in 18 games. That quickly led to bigger clubs taking an interest in the forward and in 2019 Manchester City signed the then 18-year-old talent for €4.4m. Loan spells at Lincoln City, Bournemouth, Blackpool and Middlesbrough followed, before the player joined the latter on a permanent deal in the summer of 2023. And since then Rogers has thrived in Michael Carrick’s side.

So far this season Rogers has bagged no less than seven goals and nine assists in 33 games across all competitions, which works out at an average of 0.88 goals or assists per 90 minutes of football. The player undoubtedly thrives with the ball at his feet and as an outstanding dribbler he has proven to be one of the best in the English second tier at creating goals for his team mates. Despite starting less than half of Middlesbrough’s league games this season, Rogers sits joint sixth in the Championship table for total assists. 

Although initially trained as a winger, Rodgers has played most of his football through the middle of the pitch this season and will likely join Villa as a player that can either bolster their options out wide or offer support in the No.10 or striker positions. Which will undoubtedly come in handy for the Birmingham club considering the injuries to Bertrand Traoré and Emiliano Buendía, as well as the lack of game time offered to forward Jhon Durán.
